Automation sucks!

Customer Service and automation isn't all it's cracked up to be. Whatever happened to the friendly people who used to be on the other end of a business phone line whenever we customers and consumers have a problem?

I went to pay my gas bill via automation over the phone and I think I made a mistake on the "valid from" date. I'm not sure though so I phone them and speak to a human in "Customer Service", purely because if the bill isn't paid within so-so amount of time, they cut the gas off.

Me; Can you please check for me, that I've put the correct "valid from" date, because I think I put the "expiry date" numbers into the automated payment instead.

Them; Oh sorry Ms. Stewart, it's all automated so we can`t check that.

Me; Ok, can you cancel it and I'll re-do it then?

Them; Oh sorry Ms. Stewart, it's all automated, we can't do that.

Me; Ok, can you at least take a LOOK and see if anythings gone through??

Them; Oh sorry Ms. Stewart, we won't know that yet, as it takes 3 working days.

Me; Ok, so in the meantime, I don't know if I've done it right, I don't know if the payment will go through or not, and you can send a guy to cut off my gas supply that doesn't even work anyway???

Them; Sorry Ms. Stewart, that's the way it works because of it being automated.

Me; So how will I know if it's worked??

Them; It'll take 3 working days, then you can check your bank account to see if it's gone out.

Me; And in the meantime? If it hasn't gone out? What then?

Them; Well our man will come and cut off your gas supply.

Me; Dammit can't you just cancel the automated crap and take my payment here and now??

Them; We could've done that if you hadn't done the automated one. We have no way of stopping that one or seeing if you've done it right until the money either shows up or doesn't. Oh, and because you've done the automated one, we can't do a manual one in case the first one comes through.

Me; So you can't take a manual payment right now and refund one if it happens to be paid twice???

Them; No. Sorry Ms. Stewart, if you pay 2x we cannot refund one of the payments.

Me; Ok, I've done everything in my power to make sure the gas bill is paid, so what if there WAS a mistake and the payment DOESN'T go through? How do I get you people to turn my gas on again WHEN it goes through?

Them; That will cost you 200 and something pounds for the re-connection charges.

Me: Automation sucks!!

In this hi-tech day and age, it seems a shame that people have totally lost the "person to person" relationship.

The same can unfortunately be said about a lot of online businesses too. It all seems to be autoresponders for this and autoresponders for that. Where are the REAL people??

I personally subcribe to a lot of different internet marketing newsletters and ezines and the ones I unsubscribe from quicker than you can say "Jack Flash" are the ones that are so obviously all pasted into autoresponders. The "hands off" approach, they call it.. hmmm

"Hands off" is all well and good for automating the sales process, I have nothing against that. But follow-ups via autoresponder? Nah, that just sucks in my opinion... Gimme REAL people over automation any day.

Some statistics regarding sigfiles.

I went to my website traffic logs today, just to check on how many downloads of my 2 ebooks "Forget The Hype!" and "The Confidence Booster" there had been in the month of January. I was nicely surprised when I worked it out to there being on average 8 downloads of each per day.

This may seem like a small number, and yes, I know it`s not making me any money as I'm giving them away for free, but in reality it's quite a good number.

I don't promote either of them anywhere really. Sure, I've got them both on this b. l. o. g. and they're both over on annamarketing.com, but the only other place I mention them is in my sigfiles.

Looks like it's all true about sigfiles being a great way to promote, huh? I have "The Confidence Booster" in my email sig file, and I have "Forget The Hype!" in my forum sig files. At least it seems to be true for freebies. The big question is, will it work for my paid version of "Forget The Hype!"?

I guess only time will tell...

I've got some questions regarding affiliates of the ebook, and using paypal., so I posted this in a couple of internet marketing/home business forums:

"Hiya :~)

Ok, I`m in the middle of creating an affiliate program (for buyers of my ebook and jv partners). For various reasons, I`m not too keen on clickbank, so I`m opting for paypal.

The big question is, what is the guarantee period for paypal? Clickbanks is 90 days, right? And they hold the affiliates pay for that long in case of chargebacks and what have you.

So what is the rule for paypal? How long should the affiliates wait before getting paid? I highly doubt there would be any chargebacks, I would hope not anyway, but ya never know, and then if I`ve already paid the affiliates, that money would have to come from me, and that`s not an option.

Any ideas?

I`m also looking at possibly using this system http://www.webradev.com/postaffiliatepro/
Has anybody here had any experience with it?

Thanks Anna"

I haven't had any replies to my questions yet, but when I do I'll post my findings here.

Wish me luck :~D

How To Spot A Fraudulent Email

It's been another hectic week, working the home business forums looking for interviewees has taken up most of my time. I've had tons of people offering to take part, and already had 7 of them send me their interviews. The aim is 25, then if possible I might just decide to go for 50, depending on how long it actually takes ;)

In my travels around the internet marketing forums this week, I noticed a lot of people were having problems with emails they were receiving from places like Paypal, Ebay and various online banks. The amount of phishing that's going on these days is almost incredible, what's worse is that so few people are actually aware of it, so I sat myself down and wrote an article in the hopes of helping a few more people avoid being scammed.

How To Spot A Fraudulent Email
By Anna-Marie Stewart

Have you been receiving supsicious looking emails from Paypal, telling you that your account is about to be closed or limited due to suspicious activites being registered by their staff?

It`s definitely a phishing scam where people are out to fool you into giving them your info. Looking at the code, or headers will usually reveal anonymous urls, especially numbered ones, or urls that are definitely not pointing to paypal.

The 3 Dead Giveaways:

A). The email isn`t addressed to you personally, but says "Dear customer". Paypal, and all other banks will always address you by name in their mails to you.

B). Ask around a bit, and you`ll hear of others who`ve had the exact same messages. This is because the phishing is going on in mass mailings to thousands of people at a time.

C). I don`t know about other email programs, but if you`re using Outlook Express, you can usually see the REAL website address by running your mouse over the one in the email. It`ll show up right at the bottom of your Outlook Express. Another way to check is by checking the headers of the email. This is quite easy to do, although not many people seem to be aware of it. Here`s a quick step-by-step:

1. Click once on the subject line of the mail in question to highlight it.
2. Right click the subject and choose Properties
3. Click on Details
4. Click on Message Source

This will show you every single detail of the mail, all the HTML code, all the headers, where the mail originated and a whole lot more. Once you`ve checked all that, just close the source.

All in all this will probably take up 2 minutes of your time but can definitely save you thousands of pounds, dollars or whichever currency you use, so make it a habit to "deep-check" any suspicious mails that you`re unsure of.

Pleas note that A lot of ebay emails are going around like this too, telling you that your account is about to be suspended. You might also notice a lot of emails supposedly coming from banks like Citibank. I get at least 3 or 4 of EACH every day.

Should you EVER receive anything like this, please deep-check and report to the main websites. Never click the links in the mails. Open a new browser window and TYPE IN the web-address, making sure you include https:// so that you get to their secure pages.

Can Spam again..

It started yesterday, just a couple of mails mentioning the can spam act, and a couple of links for further info.

Here`s one of them http://www.marketingsherpa.com/sample.cfm?contentID=2576

As far as I can see (don't shoot me if I'm wrong :p) if people opt out of your "brand" then that means forever and ever and even if an affiliate sends them a mail including/promoting your "brand" then you are the one held responsible for it??

Interested in hearing your thoughts on it.

Hey, it`s finally working!

Yep, I left it for a few days, just came back today to check on my b. l. o. g.'s progress and what do I see? Google ads related to my content! Yeehaaw!

LOL, about time too if you ask me :~p

Apart from that, I've been spending a whole lot of (extra) time in various internet marketing and home business forums again lately. Mainly been trying to find interviewees for my new book project. I`ve had lots of people email to say they'd participate, so far only 3 of them have actually filled in the interview and returned it to me. That`s ok though, it`s early days yet ;~)

There used to be a time when I hated online marketing forums, even though I was a moderator in a few of them (hahaha, that`s probably what the problem was, all work and no play..).

They just all seemed to be the same to me, but since starting NJAE I've spent increasingly more time in them, and come to the decision that they`re far from the same, in fact LOTS of them are extremely useful and helpful. Of course, there are a few that unfortunately turn into spam and scam bulletin boards, but if you search deep enough in your topic of interest, you WILL find some good ones.

Speaking of moderators, I used to moderate a lot of business chats too at one point in time, probably for most part of 3 years, but then I got really busy with NJAE and my moderating duties kinda waned away. Even the biz chats I used to host, which I REALLY enjoyed doing sort of died off. Maybe i should start doing stuff like that again, possibly as a supplement to the ezine or something. We'll see ;~)

I've had 3 people review the full version of Foget The Hype! for me so far, and they've ALL sent me glowing testimonials already, which is mega cool. I mean, the affiliate set up isn't even half ready yet, so I'm really happy that they like it enough to tell me exactly how much they like it.. hehehe

I've even already had 2 joint venture proposals for when it's ready from people who have only read the free version so it looks like I'm obviously on the right track with it ;~)

So, I'm off to check out some more forums, see if there's any new tips and tricks I can pick up..

Until next time

Anna

hahahahaha, just after I posted this, I refreshed the page to make sure it looked ok, and now the ads all about a. d. s. e. n. s. e. ROFLMAO

Saturday, January 15, 2005

So I figured it out...

.. the Adsense thing. not on my own of course, I had to ask people on Michael Green`s Howto Forum again before I could make sense of the whole thing. Anyway, it seems that although I`m rambling a lot about internet marketing, website traffic, my ezine and things to do with running an online business, the main reason Google Adsense isn`t showing relevant ads is this:

IT'S THE TEMPLATE I'M USING! Duh!

That thought hadn`t even crossed my mind, but a guy named Andy Hendry explained it to me. It`s because the template belongs to b. l. o. g. g. e. r. and has that word in it a gazillion times, so that`s the word Google Adsense is picking up on most.

The solution to this? I guess I hafta post a whole ton of internet marketing ramblings and try to outweigh the b. l. o. g. word... lol

So that`s that then, huh? Time to move on...

Todays been a "deadwood" day, where I`ve basically not done ANYTHING related to the ezine at all. I was bored, so I surfed a few traffic exchanges. I don`t really use them much these days, but when I do I go for ones like WebMasterQuest and IPowerFun purely because their games break the monotony of visiting other peoples sites in exchange for traffic to my own.

Apart from that, I`ve been on the hunt for affiliate scripts for use with Paypal. I need one for the affiliate program that i want to attach to my ebook. The full version of Forget The Hype! is going to offer affiliates 50% on all sales of it that they generate. I could go with ClickBank, but I`m not too keen on the way they run things there.

So yeah, I`ve been searching high and low for an affiliate script that`s really easy to use, and I`ve been unlucky enough to not find one yet..

No doubt I`ll find one soon though, and then all I need to do is get Rich, my programmer, to set it all up for me. I`ve already got Elizabeth of Strategy Ad Service working on the sales copy. I went with her because I`ve known her for more than 3 years and as I`ve used her copywriting services before, I know for definite that she`s very professional and extremely reasonable.

Until next time, have a blast :~)

Building your first Web Site

Brought to you by By Anna-Marie Stewart and Not Just Another Ezine at http://annamarketing.com

Building your first Web Site

The ease with which visitors are able to use a Web Site is very important, especially if you`re trying to market something from the site. Usability is very much about how quickly and easily visitors are able to move around the site and not just about making sure everything on the site works.

The need for your website to be easily navigated is enormous. Messy, disruptive and confusing sites are a huge turn off to potential customers. In other words: if you`re looking to make sales, make sure your website is easy to navigate so as not to chase off visitors at first sight.

Still no luck.

Google Adsense just doesn`t want to work right for me. There`s something I`m doing wrong with it, I`m sure. What that something may possibly be is way beyond my techie knowledge. Hey! I`m an internet marketer, not a website tech-head... LOL

Anyway, just as a test, I`m gonna try to put the google adsense script right here in this post, to see if it makes any difference WHERE I place the damned thing.

So here goes:

Ok, so it seems that`s not allowed, or at least the javascript for the ads isn`t allowed anyway. Bummer. Looks like I won`t be getting rich from placing ads here then, huh? hehehehe

I can`t figure out Google Adsense.....

...... and it`s driving me crazy. It just won`t show ads relevant to my content, and I don`t know how to fix it. When I play around with the template, then preview the page, it shows perfectly relevant content, but as soon as I publish the blog again, the only ads that are showing are ads for other blog stuff.....

It`s weird, and it`s a pain in the butt, so if anybody`s got any ideas for me, please let me know.

A blog in 3 minutes?

If you want to know exactly how to set up your own blog here on Blogger in 3 minutes or less, go visit Chip Tarver.

He`ll walk you through it step by step. This is an absolutely brilliant report for beginners!

Have fun :~)

Anna

I have so many questions...

.. in regards to actually publishing my full version of my Forget The Hype! ebook. At least I`ve finally decided on a price for it, and a 50% of all sales to affiliates, so I guess that`s something, huh?

I`ve been lucky enough to get some of my questions answered over on the Michael Green HowTo Forum. I love that place, it`s absolutely brilliant to just hang out there and learn all sorts of things that most of us probably haven`t even thought of when it comes to internet marketing.

So anyway, some of the questions I`ve been struggling with are things like these: Has anybody sold ebooks purely through Paypal? I know most would probably recommend using ClickBank, but for various reasons I`m not overly fond of ClickBank. How easy are other payment processors such as ibill and 2checkout? Is 50% good enough for affiliates? How do I go about protecting myself from people totally bypassing the affiliate program and selling the book themselves?

See, there`s lots to think about, and even more to figure out.

I did eventually get round to getting Adobe Acrobat Pro, which has definitely made the full version look TONS more professional than the free version does. Don`t get me wrong, the free version of PDF Factory Pro was brilliant for test purposes, and it did help me understand a lot about pdf creation, but Adobe just has so many more features.

So anyway, I`m off to see what else i can figure out....

Until next time: Have a blast!

It's Not Brain Surgery, It's Just An Online Home Based Business

While I was looking for stuff to add to this weeks issue, I remembered a really cool blog by Priya Shah. If you haven`t heard of her yet, you`ve been missing out, she`s an exceptional writer and she has tons of great info. She owns multiple blogs, but the one I wanted to point out to you right now is the Number One In your Niche blog which you can find here: http://www.numberoneinyourniche.com/blog

Priyah talks a whole lot about blogs, pagerank and powerlinking there, and it`s well worth checking out.

I also came across this article by Kirk Bannerman, about running an online business. I like it because he kinda tells it how it is, without any fluff or hype. Well done Kirk!

It's Not Brain Surgery, It's Just An Online Home Based Business

By Kirk Bannerman

Back when I first started my online home business I didn't have a clue concerning how to go about it. I had never done any Internet marketing, and didn't know anything about websites or search engines or any of that other online business stuff...in short, I was a complete rookie. In retrospect, the two major things that really helped me was that I refused to be intimidated and I kept a realistic perspective (both in terms of initial financial results and the time frame necessary to become successful).

I know from my own years of experience that relatively few business ventures are started on the Internet by people with the experience, motivation, determination, backing, and support that it takes to even have a reasonable chance of success.

Real online business people are those who work hard, who immerse themselves deeply in marketing and advertising, and who put in long hours in the beginning in order to see their Internet-based businesses succeed.

Achieving success in an online business is not difficult to comprehend. There is indeed a learning curve, but it's not brain surgery. The process of learning isn't as much the issue as are the personal traits of motivation and determination.

Develop your marketing plan and execute it. There's no magic in this online home based business stuff. We're talking real world here. It's not nearly as romantic as winning the lottery, yet many of the thousands of people I have helped to start up their home businesses on the Internet clearly came in with what I have come to refer to as the "magic/lottery" mentality. Many of those folks went off to chase another rainbow after a few months, but some of them also came to their senses and buckled down to develop very successful home based businesses.

Run, don't walk, away from all of those people that offer you "shortcuts" or "success secrets" (probably in exchange for some of your money). I mean, if they had it all figured out, why would they sell this "magic answer" to you for a few bucks instead of just keeping it private and then making tons of money for themselves? (I'll leave it to you to connect the dots)

A key point to always keep in mind is that...business is business. Regardless of whether you are on the Internet or operating a business in a shopping mall. The same fundamental principles apply to both businesses.

1) You need to have a product, or products, to sell.

2) You need to advertise to get customers to buy your
products.

3) You need to provide support to your customers who buy
your products as a result of your advertising efforts.

4) You need to build a loyal customer following, so you can
maintain a profitable business over a period of time.

Many people fall into the trap of believing that because they are doing business on the Internet, some of these steps can either be skipped or they need to overemphasize one area or another.

The bottom line regarding an online business is that you will need to advertise and you will need to take care of your customers.

Run your online home business just like a real company because it is, in fact, a real business and you have a real opportunity to either be successful or to fail. The primary difference between an online business and a traditional business is location (no traditional "storefront"). Nearly everything else is essentially the same. You have products and your objective is to sell those products to people who want/need your products.

Remember, building a business takes time, determination, and patience. Far too many people seem to think that the traffic is just going to pour in once they have put up their own website on the Internet. As anyone who has had a website for a while knows...this simply is not true, but it is often the reason people get frustrated and quit. The fact of the matter is that you need to diligently promote/advertise your website in order for your online home based business to flourish and prosper.

One of the most important bits of advice that I can pass on to you is that you must be patient. Most people start their online home business with great enthusiasm and high expectations. Often, after a few months, they become disappointed and frustrated because they are not already making a large amount of money.

These impatient home business entrepreneurs then often start to jump from one program to another every few months (never allowing themselves enough time to succeed at any of them) and, finally, throw up their hands in frustration and declare that they just can't make money online.

Stick with your business and don't give up. Dogged persistence (much like the tenacity of a pit bull) is an absolutely vital key to your eventual success. Don't give up when things become frustrating and you are not achieving the immediate success you expected. Give your online home based business sufficient time to develop and you realize the success you are seeking.

There is nothing magical about running an online home based business. It should be run the same as any traditional "bricks and mortar" business and it will succeed or fail depending on the time and effort you put into it.

There are many very ordinary people working at home and making a very good living on the Internet, will you be the next one?

MLM, Pyramid Schemes, and Matrices

Have you ever wondered what the difference is? MLM operators claim they're not operating a pyramid scheme. Matrix and "forced matrix" operators claim that what they have is better than MLM. So what are the differences?

Pyramid Schemes:

Pyramid Schemes are illegal in the USA, and probably abroad. We all know how these schemes work, or at least get the jist of the idea. A person (the originator) starts by sending a message to several people. Usually people he/she knows. The message in some round about way, will tell everyone to send him $5 or so and then send the message to someone else. All the while adding names to the list, and each new recipient must send money to the first person, second person etc.

There are a million variations of the Pyramid Scheme, but the main attribute that define a pyramid scheme ( also known as chain letter) is that there is no product, it's just people sending money. The term "Pyramid Scheme" is derived from the fact that it starts with one and the size of those involved increases as you move towards the bottom. On paper, it looks like the shape of a triangle, or pyramid.

Multi Level Marketing:

How is MLM different from a pyramid scheme? After all, on paper any MLM looks like a pyramid in reality right? The differences are very simple. In MLM there is a product being sold. Income is generated from "commissions". It's actually a pyramid scheme, except that the participants get something back regardless of whether the people they refer actually pay for something.

In MLM, the participant always gains from their investment. The catch is in the value of the product that the participant receives. This is the reason that MLM is so big on the internet. Because, information can have a monetary value, and it cost the distributor nothing. So ebooks, software, newsletters etc. These are the most common products used in MLM. MLMers have added tangible products as well, and home products were the first to use MLM as a primary marketing strategy.

The Forced Matrix:

With so many MLM programs on the market these days, originators have tried to make their programs more desirable than others. Hence the forced matrix idea. In a regular MLM program, your monetary gains are based entirely on how good you are at marketing the program. However, most people arent' very good. So it would benefit the less talented if they had help from the talented.

Basically, if the number of people who can join under you is limited in any way, then it's a forced matrix. The idea being, anyone else you refer extra..will go under someone else. The best implementations put the extra person under one of the people YOU have under YOU. Hence it helps the person under you, which helps you too.

The term is tossed around a bit, and sometimes not used at all. However, that is what defines a forced matrix. Sometimes numbers are used to describe a forced matrix more thoroughly....like "4 X 4 forced matrix" for instance. Which might mean that you can only have 4 people directly under you and only 4 people under those 4 who you recieve commissions from.

There is a hibryd idea that has become common now, where by a person can deliberately place a referral in another line of their choice. A sort of traffic control attribute that helps originators get their referrals interested. This has been an attempt to make regular MLM more appealing, and it has worked. In fact, forced matrix MLMers have even implemented the option in their own programs.

The benefits of either are about equal. With a forced matrix, you stand to earn an income faster, but increases in income are slower because your referrals get forced further down the line from you. With regular MLM you have a stronger base, and sustaining it is generally easier, but first profits can be slow. If you want a little income faster, go with a forced matrix. If you want BIG profits and are willing to work a long time for it, go with regular MLM programs.
